Swimming and Cupcakes

Today we celebrated Kaitlyn's birthday by having a pool party, complete with cupcakes! (Emmy's favorite! Yum!) Emily has absolutely no fear of the water - she runs to water, climbs in and gets mad when she is restrained in a float. Let's just say Mommy is putting her in swim lessons as soon as possible! Here are a few fun pictures from our day at the pool.

Sooooooooooooooooo Sweet!!!!

This evening Emily did the sweetest thing! I am warning you, your heart will simply melt! Aiden was very upset in his car seat and Emily reached over and held his hand while saying "Bubba Bubba"! (I will take this time to mention that this was the first time she called him Bubba, too!) He stopped crying at the comfort of his loving, big sister and she continued to comfort him until we reached our destination. My heart was over flowing with pride for my baby girl who is starting to show so much compassion for her brother. I hope you enjoy the pictures I was able to take of this special moment! I love my widdle Woyds!

Tracking and reaching

This past Tuesday I took Aiden to a pediatric opthamologist to have his eyes examined. Here is a quick run down of why we went and what he said during our visit.

Why we went to the opthamologist:

  • He had not been tracking objects yet (he is almost 5 months old)
  • He does not prefer to look at faces
  • When he makes eye contact, it seems as though he is looking through us rather than at us
  • His eyes are always looking up and back
  • He was not reaching for toys or objects

This is what we now know after visiting the opthamologist:

  • There is definitely something going on with his vision
  • His eye problem is not related to his torticollis
  • His optic nerves are perfect - he is able to receive images
  • He can track a flash light
  • Has astigmatism in his right eye for sure (don't remember about the left eye) but the specialist does not think this is the issue
  • His pupils dilate appropriately

With all of these positives, the doctor was unsure of what was going on with Aiden's eyes. Our next step is that we have to take him for a MRI down at Texas Children's Hospital. The MRI will look for things that need to be addressed by a neurosurgeon as well as look at the myelin sheaths to see if they are under developed at this point. If the answer is the myelin sheaths, there is nothing we can do but wait for them to develop on their own.

However, in the last few days, his vision is really seeming to improve by leaps and bounds! Even his physical therapist said he was finding the mid line and tracking 100x better than last week! This really makes me hopeful that his problem is related to the myelin sheaths. The therapist also thinks that this is the answer. Please pray that Aiden's vision continues to improve and that it is nothing very serious.

Play time!

Emily LOVES to hug on her little brother and play with him. It is so cute to watch them together! The other day I was able to capture this video of Emmy talking and playing with Aiden while he was in his Boppy. I can't help but smile when I watch it. I hope you will enjoy it, also! (Make sure your volume is turned up so you can hear her 'talking' to him...and when she screams, that means she is really excited, not mad!)

Aiden's First Hair Cut!

This morning Emily and I took Aiden down to the Woodlands Mall to get his hair cut. He was starting to look a little girly with his long hair that curled out around his ears! Poor baby! Since he was not sitting up on his own yet, only being 4.5 months old and all, I held him while the lady cut away. I requested that they actually cut his hair (not just trim it) then style it with spikes. The stylist interpreted this request as a mohawk, but once we left, I fixed it. :) Anyway, here are some pictures of my handsome dude and his new 'do'! Doesn't he look more like Daddy now?

Going home!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pediatrician just came by and said we could go home today! YAY! We are so excited! We will still need to watch his fluid intake and output (pee) to make sure he continues to stay hydrated but he has definitely started to feel better. Not sure when exactly we will be discharged but the process has begun! Thanks again for all the prayers!!!

Rounding the corner

Aiden has been on full strength formula in small amounts since 9 last night and has kept it all down so far! Even though he is only eating about 1 oz at each feeding, the important thing is that he is not throwing it up and he is getting more calories in that than from the Pedialyte. The doctor came through this morning and said that she is happy with his progress but would like to see him increase his intake. We have tried to get 2 oz. down him in the last 2 feedings, but his stomach has shrunk during this whole ordeal and he is fighting us. We are trying not to push him because the last thing we want to do is be the cause of his vomiting. She will be back around this afternoon (probably close to 5) to see where he stands. Jon and I are very hopeful that we will finally get to take baby Aiden home tonight. We will keep you updated as we find out more. Thank you for all of your support and prayers during this time. We appreciate it more than you know!

Mason came up to visit Aiden. It was the first time he had ever seen him!

The Junior Volunteers brought Aiden a rubber ducky that looked like a tiger. He loved it!

As soon as this little fellow is feeling better he is getting a hair cut! But he is still oh so adorable!

Grandma Lloyd was helping Aiden feel better when he was having some stomach cramps.

A scary moment

Things were looking so good this morning. After speaking to the surgeon and a pediatrician, it looked like we would be able to take him home around 5 pm and monitor him from there. He had kept down 4 oz of formula from a 7 am feeding, and then around 10 he started projectile vomiting again. We cleaned him all up (and mommy) and he immediately fell asleep for a short nap. When he woke up around 11 he looked so lonely in his crib so I went to cuddle him. We were cuddling on the couch and he threw up a little more. It was not much at all but I told Jon to have the nurses document it. As he was going out to talk to the nurses, Aiden began throwing up more and started choking then stopped breathing. His little body was going so stiff and arching in my arms as he was fighting to take a breath. I started screaming for help and soon 5 nurses were in here taking him from us to suction the throw up out and get him breathing again. So scary! Right now he is on a machine that is monitoring his oxygen levels for about 30 minutes. I am not sure what happens next. Jon and I are so shaken up right now. I know he is going to be ok, but I just wish it would happen soon! I know this goes without saying, but PLEASE keep Aiden in your prayers.

Saturday Evening Update

Tonight around 8 we FINALLY saw a pediatrician. (This only took an entire day of complaining to the nursing staff to get accomplished.) The doctor came in and took several pages of notes on the symptoms Aiden has shown over the last several days, his medical history, and family history. He examined Aiden and said he is not dehydrated yet (he has been off IV fluids since noon) and that he will recommend to the surgeons (who makes all of the decisions about his care since he was admitted through their department) that Aiden have a blood test and stool culture done. We are expecting these to be done some time tonight and have the results in the morning. If all looks good, then we can begin looking at discharge possibilities. Our little man is still only taking between 1-2 oz. per feeding and is only wanting to eat every 5 or so hours...so dehydration is still a possibility. A normal feeding is about 5-6 oz every 3 hours. I feel better though after getting some focused attention from someone who seemed to care about what was going on.

On a fun note, Aiden is practicing rolling over in his hospital crib! He has almost flipped completely, but is having trouble getting his shoulder out from under him. This is the first time he has done this so we are excited! He is such a trooper and despite his pain, he is still finding ways to make us smile. Here are some pictures from today for you to enjoy.

Saturday at Texas Childrens

This morning we started Aiden back on half strength formula and he has managed to keep it all down, although he still has his diarrhea. I have requested that a pediatric doctor come by to examine him, but they have to get permission from the surgeon. They are about to have one angry momma unleash on them. With 4 days of throwing up and diarrhea, they have yet to do any blood work or check him out to see what is going on. They are just assuming it is a bug. Since he came to the hospital under the diagnosis of an abscess, that seems to be their only concern. So frustrating! Around 2 this afternoon the nurse came in to see why Aiden was so fussy and realized that his arm was extremely puffy and swollen from the IV. She said it was caused from the IV leaving the vein. The IV was removed and now he is being watched for a few hours to see if it needs to be put back in another location. I am praying that my baby gets better soon so we can leave this place.

We did get the cultures back from Aiden's surgery and he did not have staph. It came back positive as 'graham negative rod'. This was described to us as an infection in the anal column. Don't ask us what this mean, because we don't know. :)

Back on Pedialyte

Aiden did so well today taking the formula that was mixed with water. Around 6:00 pm he had his first bottle of all formula. He only took 2 oz and we could hear him make some gagging noises, but the formula stayed down. At his next feeding, he only took 1 oz and about an hour and a half later it all came up...the 1 oz plus some from the previous feeding. So, now we are back on pedialyte! Please continue to pray for Aiden - that he will be able to rid himself of this virus so we can go home with a healthy baby boy...soon!

One more night...

The nurse just came by and said that she doubts we will be discharged until tomorrow morning around 10. She did mention the doctor could aways change the orders but that it did not look likely. So we are preparing for one more night...and looking forward to tomorrow morning.

A Special Visitor and the Surgeon Update

Last night we had a very special visitor come by...EMILY! It was sooooo good to see my baby girl as I have never been this long without seeing her. (CC and Grandma Lloyd have been taking turns watching her for us and we are so grateful for their help.) Emily was so excited to see us and even gave baby Aiden a kiss. Too sweet! It really lifted my spirits seeing her even though she couldn't stay long since it was her bed time.

So far, Aiden has been keeping his Pedialyte down since 7 pm yesterday. Yay! He is also increasingly taking more at a time. At 4 am he took 2 oz but at 10 am he finally took 4 oz! This is the most he has eaten at one time since Wednesday. The surgeon came around at 10:30 this morning and said he thinks Aiden picked up a gastro virus that is unrelated to the surgery. Poor little man! The good news is that the doctor said we can start giving Aiden formula again at his next feeding, which will be around 2 pm. It will be diluted and we will have to work back up to full strength. If he can successfully keep it down, we will be able to go home. It looks like the earliest we would get to leave would be this evening, but right now we are having to play things by ear. We can definitely tell he is feeling better though because we are starting to see some smiles again!
Emily was trying to help take care of her little brother.
CC helped give Aiden his sitz bath.Emily decided it was only fair that she got to play in the water, too.

There's my smiling baby!

Another long night ahead

Aiden has been throwing up all day. I am not sure where he is even coming up with the huge volume...he seems to be throwing up way more than is going in. Since midnight last night he has only taken in about 8 oz. and none of that has remained in his little belly. The nurses are baffled and don't know what is going on. Right now we have been told there is no way we will be discharged tonight and while we wait for the surgeons and doctors to make their rounds, Aiden has been put back on IV fluids. Please continue to pray for Aiden Logan...pray for guidance for the doctors and for healing.

A little update on our little guy

It does not look like we will be out of here this morning like we were originally told. Aiden has been having trouble keeping his food down, and is not taking much in to begin with - he has not taken more than 2 oz. since he was told he could eat again. The nurse said this could still be a side effect from his anesthesia. Jon is giving him a bottle now so we will see what he does this time. The surgeons will be back around at 5 and this is when we will know if we will get to go home or not. Until then, we are treating him with antibiotics and soaking his bottom in warm water 3 times a day to help the infection continue to drain. Hmmm, during the typing of this post Aiden decided he was done with his bottle...he drank 1 oz. Please pray that his fluid intake increases and that he is able to keep it down.

What a day!

Last night Aiden was throwing up, had diarrhea, and developed an abscess on his bottom. I was not sure if it was all related, or just happened to be a "bad day" for the little man. Since Emily never experienced any diaper rashes, I was not sure if what Aiden had on his bottom was just a bad rash or something more serious. This morning I decided to call the doctor and see if they thought he should be seen or not. Sure enough, they wanted to see him and we made an appointment for 3:15 with the nurse since Dr. Nix was off. Thinking this visit was going to be no big deal, I loaded up the car with both kids and headed down in hopes of getting a good cream to put on Aiden's bottom. Well, it took the nurse all of 5 seconds to grab another doctor in the practice and within minutes, we were told to head straight to Texas Children's Hospital (downtown) for a surgery to drain the infection. It was their opinion that Aiden had a severe staph infection and because of the location, it was too risky for anyone other than a pediatric surgeon to complete this procedure. My mom came home from work to watch Emily and Jon came home from work to drive downtown with me. Since the doctor's office had called ahead, we did not have to wait long before we were brought into a room at the ER. 2 different ER doctors came through and decided that this did, indeed, need to be done in the Operating Room with a surgeon. Aiden needed to have an IV put in for fluids and medications (it took them 20 minutes to get it in!). Thankfully Jon was there because I had to step out of the room...it was too much for me to handle! Somewhere around 8:00 p.m. Aiden was taken back for anesthesia and his surgery. It was so hard to hand him over to the doctors, but I knew he was in good hands and would be ok. The surgery did not last long...maybe a total of 30 minutes and he was out and we could see him. He had a little trouble coming out of the anesthesia, but after some cold wash cloths, patting, and prodding, he woke up. Aiden was such a trooper! The surgeon was very informative and told us that he does not think it is staph (but we will know for sure on Friday) but instead an infection in his bottom. He gave me a name of the type of infection he believed it was, but I can't remember what it is right now. The surgeon was glad we got him here when we did because it was something that was on the verge of spreading. Aiden has a surgical tie that goes through his right buttock to help keep the abscess open so it can continue to drain. We will have to come back in 10 days for it to be removed. Now we find ourselves admitted to the hospital and hoping to be discharged in the morning. Aiden is still sleeping off the pain meds and has not eaten much but I am sure that he will decide to change that right about the time I fall asleep! :) What a day! Thank you to everyone who was praying for us. You will never know what your support means to us. Here are a few pictures of my brave little Aiden.

Waiting for the ER doctors to come give Aiden his IV.

Aiden with his IV...what a trooper!

He was so hungry that he kept trying to suck on the IV! (He was not allowed to eat since he was having the surgery.)

Resting in his hospital room in his gown from what....1950???

Overtaking another one...

Emily has really enjoyed all of Aiden's seats lately...his Bumbo, Boppy chair, car seat...and now his swing! Yesterday Memaw and Papaw babysat Emily for us while we took Aiden in for his therapy and when we got home, we heard all about how Emmy climbed into the swing. Well, this is something we have never seen before...until this morning! Sure enough, that little monkey pulled herself right into the swing and happily played for about 15 minutes! I quickly grabbed my camera to snap a few pictures. (Please disregard the missing cover on the swing! Aiden threw up all over it last night and it is in the wash!)

Aiden's Physical Therapy Visit

Today Jon and I took Aiden in to have his consult with the physical therapist. Things are looking better, in some respects, than they did before we got there. The good news is, the therapist does not think Aiden's torticollis is very bad. She said he definitely has a weak neck, tight muscles and poor body tone. With this being said, he also has full range of motion in his neck and can move it from side to side...he just prefers not to since it is painful for him to move it to the right. He will have to go to therapy once a week for the next 4 months and then they will re-evaluate him to see where to go from there. During this visit, it was also confirmed that Aiden needs to go to a pediatric opthamologist to have his vision thoroughly inspected. He is having trouble tracking objects and focusing on faces. We do know that he is not totally blind because his pupils react to light, but we are not sure how well he can see. His vision problems may be directly related to his torticollis. Aiden will see this specialist on May 19th and I am hoping that we will know something when we leave that appointment. Please continue to keep our little man in your prayers. Although none of this is life threatening, we would just like some answers as to what is going on and how we can best help him.

Mother's Day Weekend

Warning...picture overload!!!! :)
I had the best Mother's Day ever! We went up to Ft. Worth to visit our old friends, the Lucado's, with my mom, sister, Randy and Abi. Kelli and I grew up next door to Mrs. Delane and her kids, Zach and Jared. It is crazy that we all have kids of our own now that are around the same age! Emily and Aiden were able to meet Jake, Zach's 2 year old, and we all went to the zoo and then to his birthday party! When we left Ft. Worth on Sunday, we headed straight to the Lloyd's house to see Jon's mom and wish her a happy Mother's Day. It was a whirlwind weekend, full of fun and relaxation! It was so nice to be able to just get away for a while. I wish we would take weekend trips more often! Here are some pictures of our Mother's Day trip.
